FARMERS BRANCH, TX-- Dallas Christian College volleyball battled Spurgeon College on Sat, October 3, but the Crusaders were unable to overcome an efficient Spurgeon attack, falling in straight sets, 25-21, 25-14, 25-17. Dallas Christian College volleyball earned a hard-fought five-set victory over Huston-Tillotson University on Saturday, October 3 in its second game of day, taking the match 25-23, 16-25, 17-25, 27-25, 14-13.
DCC put together its strongest push in the opening set. The Crusaders recorded nine kills and stayed within striking distance before Spurgeon closed out the frame, 25-21. Spurgeon gained control from there, hitting .316 in the second set and .237 in the third to complete the sweep.
Zoelley Herrera helped lead the Dallas Christian offense, finishing with six kills, 10 assists and two service aces for eight total points. Rosalind Spikes also recorded six kills while adding a solo block, and Jamie Maddy contributed five kills on 11 attacks for a .273 hitting percentage.
Kinsley Jackson added four kills while hitting .250, while Paloma Garcia was efficient in limited opportunities with two kills on four attacks for a team-best .500 hitting percentage.
Defensively, Alyssa Carreras and Lanie Wink paced the Crusaders with eight digs apiece, while Rylie Goff added seven. DCC finished the match with 39 total digs, five service aces and four total blocks.
Spurgeon was led offensively by Shannon Skinner's match-high 15 kills, while Jayci McKinney added 10 and Madison Byers finished with nine. Spurgeon totaled 42 kills and hit .250 for the match compared with DCC's 25 kills and .115 hitting percentage.
Despite the loss, Dallas Christian improved offensively as the match progressed, raising its hitting percentage from .037 in the opening set to .143 in the second and .147 in the third.
Game 2:
The Crusaders opened the match strong, edging Huston-Tillotson 25-23 in a competitive first set. After HTU responded by taking the next two sets, Dallas Christian found itself facing a 2-1 deficit and needing a fourth-set victory to extend the match.
DCC answered the challenge. In a back-and-forth fourth set, the Crusaders fought through extra points to claim a 27-25 victory, forcing a decisive fifth set. Dallas Christian then completed the comeback by taking a tight final frame, 15-13, to secure the 3-2 win.
Rosalind Spikes led the Crusaders offensively with a match-high 13 kills, while also contributing a block assist. Zoelley Herrera and Jamie Maddy each added nine kills, with Herrera also recording two service aces and six digs. Kinsley Jackson turned in an efficient performance with five kills on seven attacks, hitting .429 while adding a solo block.
Defensively, Alyssa Carreras anchored the Crusaders with a match-high 21 digs. Paloma Garcia added 15 digs, while Lanie Wink finished with nine as DCC totaled 67 digs in the five-set contest.
The Crusaders also made an impact from the service line with seven aces. Herrera and Emma Martinez recorded two apiece, while Carreras, Garcia and Wink each added one.
Dallas Christian finished the match with 41 kills, 67 digs, seven service aces and five total blocks. The victory showcased the Crusaders' resilience as DCC overcame a 2-1 deficit, survived a pressure-filled fourth set and finished the comeback in the decisive fifth. The Crusaders will be back at home on Thursday October, 8 for Senior Night.
