WAXAHACHIE, Texas – The Dallas Christian College softball team continued its three-day stretch on day two with a doubleheader at NAIA Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Tuesday, March 1. The Crusaders were neck-and-neck with SAGU in game one, falling by a run. The Lions would prove to be too much in the second game, winning in five innings.
Game 1 (2-1, L)
The Crusaders and Lions traded zeros in the first inning, but a run in the second and third innings would be enough for the home team to hang on to the one-run final. Makayla Kelly had an RBI single to center field to break the scoreless game in the second. A sacrifice fly for the Lions in the third would lift the team up 2-0. All of the Lions six hits were singles.
Through three innings, the Crusaders had one baserunner, which was a hit by pitch to
Maya Williamson to lead off the second inning. Makenzie Miller generated a rally in the fourth with a double to right field that broke the no-hit bid up.
Summer Hasfurter put runners on the corners with an infield single. However a double play on a soft pop fly and then strikeout ended the threat.
The Crusaders did break through in the sixth with a run, as
Jordyn Billodeaux singled to short. A walk to Miller put two on and Hasfurter helped her cause in the pitchers circle with a single to left. Two pop ups left runners in scoring position.
An error gave life to the Crusaders, as
Rhionnon Weatherly got on base.
Trinity Johnson pinch ran, but DCC was unable to find the tying run. Hasfurter competed six innings and allowed one earned run on six hits. She walked a pair and struck out two. There were nine ground ball outs and seven in the air.
Autumn Graham tossed a seven-inning gem for the Lions as she struck out 11 and worked around four hits, a walk, and hit batter.
Both teams committed two errors.
Game 2 (15-1, L) (F/5)
The Lions struck for two runs in the first and second innings and then expanded the lead with seven runs in the third inning to put things away. The Crusaders had cut the margin to 4-1 with a run in the third.
Miller had one of DCC's four hits and an error was able to allow
Leighianne Dale a chance to scamper home.
10 hits, six errors, and seven walks were too much to overcome for the young team.
Jackie Gutierrez and Aniya Dixon recorded their first hits of the series in this game. Hasfurter had a base knock as well. Johnson and
Hannah Mattingley combined for four innings with two apiece in the circle.
Dallas Christian will wrap up its three-day playing stretch with a road twinbill at Mid-America Christian University on Wednesday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
