Crusaders Baseball off to 2-0 Start with Sweep over Austin College

DALLAS, Texas – The Dallas Christian College baseball team went 2-0 to start the 2022 campaign with a doubleheader sweep over NCAA Division III opponent Austin College on a windy and cold Saturday afternoon.

Game one was a pitching duel that saw DCC outlast the 'Roos with a three-run sixth inning. Collin Patten dazzled with six innings of one-run ball, while Zeke Humek knocked a pinch hit, two-out single to right field that pushed the lead to 4-1.

Game two resulted in a 13-9 triumph for the Crusaders, which was headlined by a 10-run first inning. Stefon Reyes was a standout with four hits and three runs in the second game. Brandon Andrews was 2-for-5 with a team-high three RBI and two runs scored.

Game 1 Recap

After Patten had a 1-2-3 first inning, the 'Roos threatened with the first three batters reaching and none retired. A flyout to center field would lead to Logan Baller being thrown out by Andrews trying to score. Patten fanned Beau Beshire swinging to escape the jam.

The sophomore from Arlington, Texas, would allow the first run across in the third inning. A throwing error back to first allow Sergio De Pa to advance to third. With two away and a strike away, the Crusaders allowed the first damage of the game.

None of the runs were considered earned in this game by either side. DCC evened things in the third and were able to break through with a three-run sixth. Cooper Ness broke the deadlock with a single through the left side of the infield. Humek pinch hit with two outs and had a single on the right side that plated insurance runs.

Patton had allowed the first run and then got around a lead-off triple to center field in the fourth. A ground out to third was followed by strikeout swinging.  A fly ball to right ended the jam. Another outfield assist in the fifth helped Patten face the minimum that inning and then a perfect sixth closed the right-handers day. Ryan Bailey earned the save with the last inning of work. He walked one and struck out one.

Game 2 Recap

The Crusaders broke things open with a 10-run first inning to headline the second game. There were a combined 25 base hits and the Crusaders top six hitters in the lineup were out to get all 13 by the home side. Reyes, Andrews, Marcos Franjul and Joel Stone had multi-hit games, and the top three people in the order combined for seven runs scored and six runs-batted-in.

Trevor Smith went four innings in the start and allowed three runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out three. Casey Morrow pitched two innings and struck out three. He had some bad luck in giving up five runs, but one was earned. Sam Marvin closed the sweep with a solid seventh.

The 'Roos scored six runs in the last three turns to bat, including four in the sixth. They knocked 12 hits and benefited from six DCC errors.
