DALLAS, Texas – The Dallas Christian College women's basketball team bounced back on the third game in as many days with a 75-58 victory over University of Arkansas Cossatot on Wednesday. The Crusaders outscored UA Cossatot, a junior college out of De Queen, Arkansas, in all four quarters that was highlighted by a seven-point edge in the first and six-point swing in the third.
Amber Covington notched her third double-double in as many days and games straight with 23 points and 13 rebounds. The native of Rogers, Arkansas, was two points shy of her career-best less than 24 hours ago versus Arlington Baptist. Covington went 7-for-13 on field goals and was 9-for-11 at the free throw line. She was the exception to DCC's 13-for-27 team free throw reflection on the game.
Keiarra Rivers was the other Crusader standout with a double-double of her own with 10 points and a team-high 14 boards. She also led the team with five assists.
Naiya Brown and
Leia Twine each had nine points, with Twine shooting 3-for-5 from three-point territory.
Faith Salinas chipped in seven rebounds, and
Journie Hilliard added five to help highlight the Crusaders' 58 as a team.
DCC controlled the paint with a 34-24 edge on points down there. The big quarter was the third thanks to a 16-6 spread. Fastbreak points were also an advantage to DCC at 12-6. The Crusaders shot 39.4 percent from the field and made six trifectas. UA Cossatot was held to 28 percent shooting from the floor overall and 7-for-39 from three-point territory.
The Colts dropped to 7-7 overall.
The victory for Dallas Christian matched its total wins for 2020-21 with 15. DCC jumped out to arguably its best start by winning nine-of-11 to start the campaign.
The game started in favor of DCC and would see both sides try to gain momentum. It was a couple of treys by Twine in under two minutes that pushed the early edge to seven points after one quarter. In the second quarter, the Crusaders made it a double-digit margin early. UA Cossatot sliced the gap to four (25-21) on a trey by Mikayla Scott, but DCC twice stretched the lead to 10 including halftime with a 33-23 score.
The margin in the third quarter reached eight for the Colts, who tried to stay close but DCC got to double figures in the latter part of the quarter. The lead eventually grew to 16 on a late layup by Rivers in the final ticks on the scoreboard. After leading by as many as 24, the Colts totaled 11 points in a row and made it a 10-point deficit with about two minutes left in regulation. A short-handed Colts team with just six players able to play at the end would be tested with foul trouble. The guests actually played the final minute and a half with the Colts having four players on the court. Luckily the game was already in hand, so DCC just remained up by double figures and enjoyed the 2-1 start to the week.
That was finally win number 10 at the friendly confines for DCC.
Dallas Christian will head out for a two-game road trip this Friday. The road stint starts on Friday at Ecclesia College at 5 p.m. DCC will then close the road swing on Saturday at NCCAA Southwest Regional opponent No. 4 Ozark Christian College.
