DALLAS, Texas – The Dallas Christian College women's basketball team returned home after two weeks off and reversed its last appearance of poor shooting by delivering its best shooting numbers of the campaign en route to a 92-42 victory over Calvary University on Monday afternoon.
DCC reached double figures in wins at 10-2 and were able to score a season-best 92 points, which was one point more than a double overtime win over Randall University on November 19. The Crusaders were lethal from behind the three-point arc, easily shattering a season-most 15 trifectas. Leading the group with a 4-for-6 effort that accounted for a personal-best 12 points was
Nina Hedrington. She was one-of-four players with four assists, as
Mckayla Washington,
Courtnee Locke, and
Naiya Brown also achieved that mark. Five other players hit two made three-pointers, with four coming off the bench:
Briana Davis, Lock,
Carmen Rosales, and
Leia Twine.
Keiarra Rivers paced the offense with a game-high 13 points on six-for-eight shooting from the field. Hedrington and Davis were each in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively for their own career-highs. There was plenty of offense to spread around, as DCC had 13-of-14 players in the scoring column. Seven eclipsed eight points with a quartet on the bench with that amount in Locke, Rosales, Journie Hillard, and
Taylor Brokenberry.
Micayla Havard was the team leader in rebounds with eight.
The Crusaders shot 44.3 percent from the field and were 15-for-44 from downtown. They surpassed 50 rebounds for the sixth time this season – all at home. The 31 assists were easily a season-high, with the next highest being 22 versus Southwestern Adventist University on November 18.
The game was a tight affair with DCC holding an 8-6 advantage through the first six minutes of the game. Suddenly the home team got hot and would finish on a 7-0 run to go up nine at the end of the first frame.
That lead ballooned to as high as 21 before Calvary put a stop to it just over four minutes into the second. A three by Mikayla Jones ended the DCC run and the home team was cold since
River Romine's three at 7:11 had opened a 27-6 edge. The next Crusader basket was at 4:21, which was a trey by Rosales and they would extend the lead into the 20s through halftime. The largest lead at any point in the first half was 25 with 1:43 left until intermission on a trey by Hedrington.
The 30 points in the second quarter were the most in a 10-minute period by the Crusaders this season, and were helped by 7-of-14 three-point shooting. The Crusaders would dominate in the second half, scoring 6-of-14 from three-point range in the final quarter, which led to 27 points overall in that quarter.
The Crusaders won for the 10
th time this season and are arguably off to their best start in program history through the first 12 games. DCC won for the seventh time in eight tries at home.
Dallas Christian is back on the court Wednesday versus Jarvis Christian College, who are an NAIA opponent. This game will be an Exhibition for the Crusaders and is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m., but subject to change to 5 p.m.
