DALLAS, Texas – It took a second half comeback for the Dallas Christian College women's basketball team to defeat Texas Christian College on Monday night. Trailing 21-10 after one quarter and 39-23 at intermission, the Crusaders outscored Texas Christian College by 25 in the entire second stanza to earn a victory against a non-league opponent. The statistics will be recognized by the college, but not toward the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCAA) rankings since Texas Christian is not a countable team.
Down as many as 21 in the third quarter, the Crusaders began chipping away at the large margin. It seemed like the team was playing better, but still had a lot of ground to cover until the last 4:33 minutes where the Wolfpack were held scoreless through the final horn of the quarter. DCC poured 14 points and made it a one possession game (52-49). The run carried to 18 points as
Keiarra Rivers swiped a steal and made a basket and then had another layup for the go-ahead basket after Courtney Locke forced a turnover of her own. At 8:16, Texas Christian snapped the cold spell and would go up two (55-53), but that was the last time DCC trailed.
Amber Covington hit back-to-back layups, with the second coming on a steal by Rivers and an assist by
Mckayla Washington. The Crusaders pushed their lead to as many as 10 (68-58) in the last four minutes and held on.
Rivers paced the offense with a game-high 21 points and shot 50 percent from the field (8-16). She missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Covington registered her second straight double-double with 18 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. The Rogers, Arkansas, native also dished a game-high five assists. Covington and Rivers combined for 26 points in the second half with 14 and 12, respectively.
Faith Salinas added eight-of-12 points in that half. She also garnered a double-double with 10 boards. Washington and
River Romine both dished four dimes.
COACH TIDWELL'S REACTION:
"We showed a lot of Character and Talent in a Major comeback from an 18 point halftime deficit! Definitely picked up our intensity and hit some key shots, grabbed some huge rebounds and created many much needed TCC turnovers that led to key transition baskets! Outstanding effort by TCC and Head Coach Antwain Warren – The Pack was prepared!"
