Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DCC Men's Basketball Defeats York College (NE) in OT

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – The Dallas Christian College men's basketball team was able to get a positive result on Saturday in an exhibition game over York College (NE) on Saturday in neutral site matchup at host Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU). DCC led most of the game and never saw a lead change beyond halftime. This included a largest lead of 15 with just under eight minutes left in the second half. York was able to come back and tie things at the end of regulation. The Crusaders held strong in overtime with just enough to win, 92-90.

For the first time this season, DCC took a lead into halftime with a 46-40 score. Even with the narrow margin, York College did not even things until 1:18 left in regulation. Teams exchanged a pair of free throws with DCC taking the lead each time. Jason Makayabo had the go-ahead field goal with 19 seconds. York split at the line, but then DCC missed both free throws and left it in York's possession down one with 13 ticks left. A foul with time about to expire gave the Panthers a chance for two shots and down one. They missed the first and hit the second to secure a tie and force an extra period.

Joseph Allen hit a three-pointer to start overtime. The Crusaders outdid York 7-5 and never trailed in the five-minute stanza. The freshman out of Marshall, Texas, single-handily outscored the opposition with six points for DCC in overtime. This included the go-ahead free throw with a minute left as the back-end of two made it 91-90. A steal by Makayabo on the next possession led to a foul and eventually another point by Nick Erves, who was the team's leading scorer with 22 points. York turned the ball over on the next play, but so did DCC as Jhi Jackson got the ball back. A missed jumper finished the game with the Crusaders hanging on.

Erves was 6-for-12 from the field, 3-for-5 from three, and 7-for-9 at the charity stripe. He also garnered a team-high nine rebounds and was one shy of a double-double. Erves dished six assists, too.

Jalen Perez chipped in 13 points, while Jairus Allen had 12 and Jordan Chambers rounded out the double-digit scoring quartet with 11. Perez dished four dimes and the team had 19 compared to 12 by the Panthers.

The Crusaders bench outscored York by 20 (59-39) and had a 19-15 edge on points off turnovers despite committing six more of them (26-20). DCC shot 47.1 percent from the floor that included 48 percent in both halves of regulation. The team managed 10 made three-pointers and was 18-for-27 (66.7 percent) at the free throw line. DCC barely did win the battle on the boards with a 40-39 edge, but that should be considered a positive regardless due to the all-guard team deployed by second-year Head Coach Dwight Coleman.

Dallas Christian will continue its stretch of exhibitions with four contests over the next week. Up next is local opponent UNT-Dallas on the road at 7 p.m. at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship South of downtown Dallas. On November 19-21, DCC will play Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Angelo State University, and University of Texas at Tyler.
